Ireland Bros. Fire - 1911

In 1911 a fire that started in the Ireland Brothers grist mill consumed five buildings on Main Street. Burned were the grist mill, a two-story wooden block, a drug store, a general store and an apartment house. The town’s electric generator, used to provide electricity to homes and businesses in the village was destroyed. It was housed in the basement of the mill.

Shortly after the fire Central Maine Power Company began setting poles and stringing wires to bring electricity to the town.
