In 1999-2000 the entire Main Street of Corinna, Maine was demolished as the EPA began the clean up the contaminated Eastland Woolen Mill Superfund Site. The Cattail Press will chronicle the demolition and cleanup of the village area.

Lately in Corinna...

November 28, 2003

This picture of the mural students painted on the Eastland Woolen Mill wall on Main Street, Corinna in 1998 is one of the earliest pictures archived on The Cattail Press. The page displaying this and other photos of the mural was posted on October 24, 1998.

In September of 1999 I began posting pictures, once a week or so, of events and scenes in Corinna. In February 2000 the postings became a daily occurrence and the archive began to grow. As of today there are 1492 web pages and 1967 photographs on the site.

Events in Corinna offered some exciting photographs, especially in the years from 1999 to 2002. As the demolition of the mill and Main Street proceeded it was easy to find interesting and sometimes dramatic pictures. In the years since 1998 I have taken over 10,000 photographs and outgrown or "used up" 4 digital cameras. One was smashed to bits when I fell on icy river bank rocks and broke two ribs trying to get a winter photo of the mill.

My goal has been to document the changes in Corinna. For some time things changed so fast that daily photos were required. Because the rate of change has slowed, weekly postings seem more reasonable now. Starting next week The Cattail Press will become a weekly web publication.

For the past 5 years many people have contributed to the content and value of this web site. Some have contributed Guest Book entries, pictures, suggestions and even money to help with the costs. I want to especially thank Orrison Moody of Corinna. His regular contributions have been a great help. The unexpected surprise and most important part of the site has been the connections between people the site has fostered. Thank you to all. It has been a great pleasure.

The new weekly edition will be posted Sunday evening. There will be a new layout and some added features. I will remove the present pages and the archive from the web site. However, I do have plans to transfer the entire site, as it exist today, to a CD-ROM format. If this works out I will make it available at a reasonable cost for anyone who would like to have a copy of The Cattail Press, complete up to November 30, 2003.
