Lately, in Corinna...

The contaminated soil stock pile has been re-covered with a winter cap. This black cover looks stronger than the blue tarps. Notice the tie-downs that now cross part of the pile. The cover is also anchored with weights.

The pile was reshaped before the new cover went on to be sure water would run off. The EPA says the pile will be checked regularly throughout the winter, especially during storms, to be sure the cover remains intact.

Soil decontamination was to begin this year in a pilot project testing the thermal treatment system. However, the 18,000 cubic yards presently in the pile is about three times more soil than originally estimated. The goal now is to treat all of the soil starting in late Spring next year.
