From what I just read on here, Corinna is getting a new school...Where is it to be built? Will it be elementary?

Alden- SAD 48, the local school district, is building two new middle schools to house grades 5-8. The one Corinna students will attend in located near Nokomis Regional High school. It will be open by the 2002-2003 school year. -Ken

Winchester Park Monument. According to town records, there was substantial consideration to the Monument. At the March 1912 town meeting $500 was raised towards a Soldiers Monument. In Sept 1913, J. Howard Winchester deeded property to the town for the Park. A contract for the Monument was signed in Jan 1914, with the J Knowles Post, No. 52, G.A.R. contributing $500.
Work was to be completed by Jun 1914 and the Levi Stewart estate would pay $1000 per agreement with his sister Elizabeth Winchester to pay one half the cost. Levi died May 1910, so obviously some discussion predated that.
For those unfamiliar with the Monument it is a statue of a Civil War soldier mounted on a multi layered base. The front inscription reads "DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF THE DEFENDERS OF OUR FLAG 1861-1865".

Winchesters. Benjamin Winchester was a prominent minister in the early settlement of Corinna, 1820s. His son John married Elizabeth Stewart, daughter of another prominent preacher, Elder David, and brother of philanthropist Levi. John and Elizabeth had John Howard, Alice and Mary. J. Howard was a prominent citizen, Stewart librarian (first I think), and lived in the recent Harold and Ida Davis residence. Howard gifted the Winchester Park, I believe in honor of his father John, a Civil War veteran. I don't know of any named Winchesters in the area.
Alice Winchester Thurston is ancestor of Alice Bird and Jane Quimby Briscoe.
Mary Winchester Hilliker is ancestor of Hillikers, my line of Smiths, and Hansons of St. Albans. It may be of further interest that D.D. Stewart, brother of Levi and Elizabeth, was a prominent attorney in St. Albans and the benefactor of their Town Hall.

Carl- Thank you. This is very interesting information. I appreciate your work to share it with us. -Ken

Did I hear correctly, two of the trees have been removed? Everyone I show my photos to agrees that the front 2 trees need to go.
Regards to all in my adopted home.

Norm,
I believe Mrs. Winchester was Levi Stewart's sister. Mrs. Winchester's daughter was Gilman Wallace Hilliker's first wife and died quite young.
My grandfather Densmore Stewart Hilliker was the only son of Gilman and the Winchester daughter.
This traces Winchesters back to the Stewart family.
Carl Smith might know more.

Hi Ken;
I enjoyed seeing Corinna last week-end. Also, enjoyed visiting with your mom & dad at my cousin's 50th. wedding ann. in Exeter. We were reminiscing about our younger years...I told your dad I remember living across from his folks. They had a yellow house on the corner & we lived in a lg. brown house on the other corner. Teddy Closon lived next to us; he was like a big brother to my sister & me. One day I went upstairs to visit the kids who lived above us; about to knock on their door when I saw small flames in the upper part of the shed. A paint can & rags had been left by an open window with the intense heat of the sun shinning in..that must have started it. I ran down to the clothesline where my mom & Mrs. Clson were talking & tugged at my mom's and to tell her. I was ' hushed' as we were taught not to interrupt our elders. Finally, I blurted out that the house was on fire; that got their attention ! The fire truck came & I remember my dad walking up the back mill road to see what was going on..not much damage done. Was trying to think how old I was when we lived there..it was 1938, I was nine yrs. old....dad & I were listening to the old 'table' model radio ( not many news stations then ) . There was a 'live' newscast from Lakehurst, N.J. about the Hindenbury approaching, then, the announcer's voice changed & he told of that great airship bursting into flames. Most everyone has heard that broadcast. He was crying as he said, " Oh, what a loss of humanity.' I saw my dad crying also; any loss of life was taken very seriously in those days. Later that year, we were moving...had furnishings on a truck; the sky became grey & the rain & winds were strong. My uncle Elmer & dad took the mattresses off the truck..we slept on the floor that night. We were warned not to got near the windows. The hurricane came up the coast; our lg. tree fell across the road, blocking it..and no chain saws in those days ! !
We learned the extent of the hurricane the next day. ( Was that in Oct? ) Tell your mom I have a nice picture of her that I took last week-end; will get it to her. "Hi' to Bud and Hope in Florida; also Phil & Dot in Augusta. I have a picture my dad took of the Corinna library in 1928..no trees at all. In fact, a picture of it is in a glass paper-weight beside me right now. Happy I got to see the old home town ! Philla-Mae.

Ken,
OK, let's abandon the Eastland idea. It appeared to be as popular as the latest tax increase out of Augusta.
By popular demand, here's idea number two. Name it after the young lady who (whom?) the town
was named after. Then, certain sections of this new park could be set aside to honor people and things like the Cattail section, the Corundel section and sections named after people who have done much for Corinna, like John Bird for instance. Each section could be different , reflecting that particular theme. You could build a replica of the Eastland Mill with a giant hole in the center, at the entrance, for donations. Call it the Eastland money pit in remembrance of the costs of removing their contamination. The walkways of this park could be paved with the bricks. Just a thought and aren't you glad I don't have too many.

Ed and I definitely agree that the name of the new park should be a link to the present and to the future, though we understood Norman Clarke's rational for choosing Eastland Park. The "Cattail Park" or "Cattail Common" since it will be the central area for the new Corinna would be a fitting name honoring the SITE that has brought so many of us together.

To honor Ken for the excellent job he has done with coverage on the mill project and keeping us all informed, I suggest calling the park "The Cattail Park". We can even plant some cattails along the river, as I'm sure they won't obstruct the view of our majestic landmark, The Stewart Library Building. Come on, Let's hear some more suggestions! At first I thought it would be a shame to cut the tree in front of the Stewart Library, then I got my photos back. It was almost impossible to get a good shot of the front of the building without those two trees in the way. I did manage to get one great shot, which I will share with the Historic Society. Now about those electrical wires. When are they going? Pleasant Street (sorry St. Albans Rd) is such a pretty place lots to photograph...but those wires. Also what about that UGLY mustard yellow building almost on top of the Methodist Church? Any plans to remove that eyesore? The church is so pretty (plus I am a Methodist) so
I would love to see that go.
By the way, I love your town and the folks in it. Of course I love the Carcieri's most of all, relatives you know. If you just were closer to the ocean, why I would move there myself. Norm, you may have just started the next great debate. I would hope the park would be named something different then Eastland. I also have many fond memories of working there and it provide a good income for me going to school. It also convinced me that was not a life time career.
It seems we lived with "Eastland School" in exchange for many, many years of no tax revenue from the mill, the town ended up with a large unpaid tax bill when the mill closed and who do you think is really paying for this clean up. I don't think it is some pot of gold the government found at no cost to the citizens go the United States. The park could honor veterans, especially those who died in the line of duty.
Ken, thanks for the site and keep up the great work.

Ken,
Nice photo of the town. Good to see the "overhead" view so things can be put into perspective. The area between the new road and the old mill site, just below the Laundromat is a great place for the new park. Is that where is is going to be?
Perhaps it should be called Eastland Park. I know that that name causes a lot of hard feelings there but it did provide incomes for many, many people over that years and did a few things for the town. It was a large part of Corinna and it's history. The name would also signify that the "new" Corinna came about because of the mill and the tearing down of same. So, the name would have that double meaning.
I worked there for three and a half years. I did not, however, contribute to the pollution with the exception of a few bathroom breaks. It was not a bad work experience except for the low pay.

What a difference that new bridge makes. Nice job DOT, et. al.! There has been much discussion about what to do with the intersection of Spring Street, Exeter Road, and Route 7. I've heard everything from a 'roundabout', to demolishing either Marvin Lister's building or the Family Affair Restaurant, all the way up to building an Interstate cloverleaf interchange.
I've personally used the Exeter Road for many years, and that flashing caution light has been more than sufficient. If anything, it's even better than it was. I don't want to open another can of worms, but what would be wrong with leaving everything exactly the way it is now?

I drove across the new bridge 3 times today, and then I parked my car and walked over it. That's the best way to take in all the newness of our "new" downtown. Not much room for buildings, but there's room for growth on both sides. Even got to stop and visit with folks on the walk. Roger Howes and I have the new town all figured out, just as everyone else probably does. Taking the walk reminds me of those days walking the old downtown, past Bob Brown's barbershop, Holbrook's Store, Carl Edgerly's, the Rexall, always seemed to be in the shade, while the big green mill basked in sun. The openness of it all will take some getting used to, but I guess it's our turn to build new memories for our heirs.

well ken, the girls lost. they played a hard game against a very experienced team. score 8 to 3. the girls did learn alot this year. alot of first time players for this league. stealing and base leading is a new thing. hats of to jim clark for coaching the team. wonderful job, i know my daughter is looking forward to playing next year. jim didn't have a easy time of it with only a few return players. had to start at the basics with the younger girls (ages from 15 to 10, with mostly 10 and 11 yr olds). field hockey camp starts next week at nokomis for this age group. busy, busy, busy!!!!! have a great august!!

Supp everyone in corinna i think they should have left the old junior high open so us kids could have some room ta move around in cuz the new building they built for us is very small and the other one wuz left unused for a few years and it could have saved some money
rather than building a new building.
